After finding Paleo and improving her personal health and performance, she has since run over 17 Paleo nutrition challenges at various CrossFit gyms in Georgia and California. She has also coached girls volleyball for the past 16 years.
She has a passion for nature and the environment, and worked in the field of environmental youth education for the past 8 years. She created the Youth Education programming and summer camp curriculum for Trees Atlanta, an environmental non-profit in Atlanta, GA.
I grew up in a single parent household, regularly eating fast food and quick-to-make meals. Cereal, macaroni and cheese, meat and potato dinners were the regular when I moved in with my grandparents in high school. I had played volleyball since 5th grade, and I loved to be active, whether on a court or out in nature. Regardless of my high activity levels, I was always what I call “fluffy”- not terribly overweight, but not in possession of a fit body either. Karen introduced me to the world of CrossFit in 2008, which led to my first introduction to Paleo when my gym held a challenge. I knew I had found my groove. I lost 2 pant sizes and gained 7 pound of muscle in 6 short weeks! I was hitting personal records on lifts and got my Fran time down to 6:47.
My life from 2011 up to this year was exceedingly stressful- the most stressful was moving my father from California to live near me in Atlanta, GA when his early onset dementia began progressing rapidly. I wanted to care for him during the last years of his life. Caring for him, along with working 3 jobs, and my mother being diagnosed with cancer, had me on my toes constantly. Additionally, I had been having tremendous back pain, which prevented me from continuing to workout. I was diagnosed in 2015 with 2 herniated discs in my low back. I know I wouldn’t have been able to manage the stress and my injury without my excellent diet and clean lifestyle. When we feed our bodies the right fuel, it is incredible what we can handle without damaging ourselves during trying times!
With the love and support of Karen I quit my jobs and moved back to California. I dialed in my diet even further and started therapy and training with Ty Silva, my Neuro Kinetic Therapist, at One Fit Body in El Dorado Hills. Just 3 months after moving back to Cali, I am deadlifting my body weight, stress free and loving life instead of feeling on the edge. This is my freedom. Living with love in my life, eating clean, working out, being in nature, and knowing that every day I am taking the right steps to protect myself from the fate my parents dealt and are dealing with.
