Nutrition First (an interesting post about blood chemistry)

We believe in looking at nutrition first. Even when I (Karen) had my practice in Los Angeles I always asked about my patients diet. I really lamented not being in a position to set myself up with my patients to have them seek me out primarily for nutritional counseling, as I was advertised as an acupuncturist/TCM practitioner. Every patient wanted to be treated with these modalities, so our discussion about diet was limited. I would suggest having a session or two that was only about nutrition, but people for the most part wanted treatment. It made them feel immediately better for a period of time and they didn't have to make difficult lifestyle changes. I am writing another post about why I don't have a shingle hung as an Acupuncturist, so I'll talk more about this later.

In my partner and my current "clinic model", aka the internet, we are able to present ourselves the way we truly believe is most effective- as NUTRITION FIRST practitioners.

Why is this so important to us? The straightforward answer is; blood chemistry. You are what you eat. Even more, how you FUNCTION comes from what you eat. Why is this?

It's chemistry. When you put food in your mouth and chew it up, your saliva combines with that food and starts breaking it down into smaller pieces. The initial stage of nutrient absorption begins in your mouth. In your stomach food is further broken down into molecules. In your small intestine, the molecules your food contained are absorbed into your bloodstream and delivered all around your organs and tissues. Whatever food you put in your mouth and consume BECOMES the chemistry profile of your blood, and that chemistry profile tells your body how to feel.

If you put food with poor nutritional value into your mouth, you are creating a poor chemistry profile in your blood, and thereby you have created the reality of feeling poorly in your body.

If you put food that is what I call Not-Food (think fast food, soda, candy, alcohol, doughnuts, Doritos, Cheetos, etc...) into your mouth and consume it, this "food" sends your body into an emergency state. This Not-Food actually robs your body of nutrition because it requires your body to work very hard to mitigate the damage these "food" items cause as they break down into your blood stream chemistry. Creating a blood chemistry that is heavily comprised of Not-Food will make you feel Not-Healthy as it creates the experience of disease in your body- Cancer, Arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, the list of disease names goes on and on...

It seems so simple- eat health giving food. Don't eat sugar, quit the soda and diet drinks. Don't drink alcohol. Eat your veggies. Drink water. But changing the way one eats, especially if they have been eating a certain way for a very long time, requires planning, motivation, goal setting, and work in the form of shopping and cooking. It can be emotional, it can be frustrating, it can be tiring. We cannot do all this for you but we can absolutely be your guides along the path of change.  Lauren and I live this reality every single day and help our clients and patients with all of these challenges. We would love to help you reset your blood chemistry to a profile of excellent health!
